Feeling prepared can make surgery day much less stressful. Whether you're having hernia repair, gallbladder removal or another procedure, this checklist walks you through what to do in the weeks, days and hours before surgery. Always follow the specific instructions from your surgeon, since they may differ from these general tips.

Two to four weeks before surgery

  • Confirm your surgery date, time and location
  • Make sure our office has your current insurance card and ID. Our team verifies benefits and obtains any required authorizations
  • Complete any pre-op testing your surgeon orders, such as blood work, an EKG or imaging
  • Get medical clearance from your primary care doctor or specialist if requested
  • Ask your employer about time off, and bring any disability or leave forms to our office early
  • If you smoke, ask your doctor about quitting. Stopping even a few weeks before surgery can help healing

One week before surgery

  • Review your medications with your surgeon, including blood thinners, diabetes medicines, vitamins and supplements. Some may need to be paused
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and, ideally, stay with you the first night
  • Prepare your home: easy meals, loose clothing and commonly used items within reach
  • Fill any prescriptions you'll need after surgery ahead of time if your surgeon provides them

The day before surgery

  • Follow your fasting instructions exactly, usually nothing to eat after a certain time
  • Shower as directed. Some patients are asked to use a special soap
  • Remove nail polish, jewelry and piercings
  • Get a good night's sleep

What to bring on surgery day

  • Photo ID and insurance card
  • A current list of your medications and allergies
  • Glasses, hearing aids or dentures with a case
  • Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes to go home in
  • Leave valuables at home

After surgery

  • Walk short distances several times a day to help circulation
  • Take medications exactly as prescribed
  • Follow lifting and activity limits from your surgeon
  • Keep incisions clean and dry as instructed
  • Keep your follow-up appointment

Frequently asked questions

Some, yes, with a small sip of water. Your surgical team will tell you which ones.
